Aim: To determine the frequency of oral soft tissue lesions in HIV+ children receiving antiretroviral treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective and descriptive study was undertaken in eighty-three (83) HIV (+) children, ages 5 to 12 years old, receiving antiretroviral treatment, who attended the Infectious Disease Centre at the Dental School of the Universidad Central De Venezuela (CAPEI/UCV) for oral care, from October 2013 to October 2014. HIV (+) children undergoing antiretroviral therapy 100% with CD4 over 400, participated in the study. All children had oral examinations at the start of the study, and then again on a quarterly basis during the course of the study. Frequency of oral soft tissue lesions present was included as part of the examination. The results are reported as frequencies and percentages. RESULTS: Of this sample, 53.01% (44) were boys and 46,99 % (39) girls. Oral soft tissue lesions were found in 84% (70) of the participants. A frequency of 35.7% (25) presented with gingivitis, followed by candidiasis type Angular Cheilitis 24.3% (17). Erythematous Candidiasis 12,9% (9). Pseudomembranous Candidiasis 8,6% (6). Herpetic lesions virus10% (7) and Canker sores were found in 4,3% (3). Combination Xerostomia and Candidiasis 2,9% (2) Xerostomia and Virus Herpes Simplex 1,4% (1). CONCLUSION: Over half of the HIV (+) children studied presented oral soft tissue lesions. It seems that antiretroviral therapy has no effect on the appearance of oral soft tissue lesions.
